British cargo and passenger vessel, driven ashore, 16 November 1696 and stranded at Weymouth on her passage from Antigua via Plymouth to London with sugar, tobacco and passengers. Constructed of wood, she was a sailing vessel.

Full Description

`Weymouth, Nov. 18: On the 16th inst. 5 ships (who were part of the fleet from Plymouth) were forced in here by a storm, but one of them, bound home from Antego, was drove on shore, where both ship and cargo (except some rigging), were lost, but all the men saved; the rest rode out the storm. (1)

`Weymouth, Nov. 17: A ship from Antigua, with sugar and tobacco, was yesterday drove ashore by the violent winds, and lost, but the men saved. (2)

`Weymouth, Nov. 18: [5 other vessels, including another ANTEGOA and] the ANTEGOA frigate, Michael Andrews master, for London put into our Road, being forced in by a storm, the last of them ran ashore and is cast away, all the crew and passengers are saved, but the ship and goods are lost, except some of the timber and tackling, the rest rode out the storm… (3) [The word `frigate could indicate a merchantman up to 1800: OED] Master: Michael Andrews Date of Loss Qualifier: A
