Full Description

Stranded/Total Loss (5) `Ran aground on the notorious Mixen at the entrance of our harbour...the vessel broke up and washed ashore during the heavy sea and strong wind that prevailed on Sunday night last. On Monday morning no vestige of her was to be seen on the rocks...most of the timbers and materials have been recovered. (2) `The JAMES MOORHOUSE...from Portsmouth for Plymouth, in approaching the harbour last evening, got on the rocks a little to the southward of the entrance, and lies in a dangerous position; should the weather quickly moderate, hopes are entertained that she may be got off; part of the cargo of potatoes saved. (3) `The JAMES MOORHOUSE...from Portsmouth to this port [Weymouth], and not to Plymouth, as before reported, with a cargo of potatoes...is a wreck. (4) Sources (1) and (5) give the name of this vessel as MOREHOUSE, and give a reported date of loss as the month of MAR-1858. Master: Martin D t

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
