Summary

A long covered ropewalk building, part of the St John’s Works of Thomas Tucker constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. It was a single storey red brick building with alternate windows and louvred openings along its length. Later it was split into two buildings and used as a boat works. It was demolished in the mid-1990s.

Full Description

A long covered ropewalk building, part of the St John’s Works of Thomas Tucker (1). The ropewalk was constructed in the early 20th century between 1901 and 1903 and is shown on the 1930 Ordnance Survey map stretching down to the river through the former Hide and Skin yard. In 1947, Thomas Tucker and Sons was taken over by Joseph Gundry and Co. and the works were closed down. The ropewalk building was later used as a boat works by Newbridge Boats Ltd and divided into two parts. It was demolished in the mid-1990s. <1> <2>

Site of rope walk now part of the premises belonging to Newbridge Boats Limited. Exceptionally long 20th century rope walk, now divided into two parts. Single, storey building of red brick on a rubble plinth, with a pitched slate roof. The building has industrial windows with vertical glazing bars only, alternating with louvred openings. The north facade is obscured by other buildings. <3> <4>
