Full Description
Dreadful effects of the late tempest: ...Portland...In the West Bay the wrecks were numerous; among them was the CARVALHO, a large West Indiaman, laden with rum and cotton, which foundered off Fleet and the whole crew perished. (2) `...captain buried in St. George's Churchyard on 28th November along with 16 of his crew and one passenger. On 3rd December the grave was opened and the body of Hugh, Baron Fraser, late Civil Commissary of Demerara, was also buried. (3) Source (1) states the nationality of the vessel as British; the name CARVALHO is Portuguese. NB: This vessel may be a variant account of the loss of the COLVILLE, also a West Indiaman lost in the same area in the same storm, with the loss of all crew. The details in source (3) are given as appertaining to the CARVALHO, but the details appear to be closer to those of the COLVILLE.
