Summary

1840 wreck of Austrian polacca or polacre which stranded on Chesil Beach while bound from Antwerp to Istanbul. Laden with sugar, textiles and logwood, she was a wooden sailing vessel.

NB: At this period the Austro-Hungarian Empire had a seaboard encompassing parts of Italy and the Balkan countries. The name SAGITTARIO and the name of the master suggest that the vessel belonged to an Italian port.

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
