(2) 19-JAN, DEVERON, anchored in Portland Roads with a cargo of china clay, collided with HMS CONFLICT in a SW 2 in Portland Roads (3)

Early in the morning on the 19th June 1905, the schooner Deveron (misspelt Devoran on the photograph) was at anchor in Portland Harbour. A teenage boy was the only sailor on deck. He was watching a squadron of destroyers leaving the Harbour in line astern, the last ship in line, H.M.S. Conflict turned wide and struck the Deveron, then continued on her way without waiting to see what happened to the ship she had struck. The schooner sank within minutes, but happily the crew all got off in time. Several weeks later she was successfully raised. The officer on watch on the Conflict was severely reprimanded.(4)
