Full Description

Year Built: 1859 Master: Nierens Crew: 6 Crew lost: 4 Date of Loss Qualifier: R `...Dutch vessel had foundered in the bay and four of her crew had perished...whilst in the channel she sprang a leak...the water gained on them and the master, finding all endeavours unavailing to relieve the vessel, tried to make for Portland... (2) `Tuesday a.m. received sad news that a Dutch vessel had foundered in the roads and her crew lost. On Sunday last she sprang a leak in the channel, keeping the crew constantly at the pumps and, making for Portland, hoped to save her by running her ashore. She was within three or four miles due south of Weymouth pier when she suddenly sank in 11 fathoms. The master, two seamen and a boy tried to save themselves in a boat; but it got foul of the rigging and capsized, drowning its occupants. The mate and one seaman got into the main topmast head where they lashed themselves using halyards and remained there 13 hours until rescued at 11am on Tuesday. The weather was mild and not much sea, otherwise they would have drowned, being but a short distance above water. Dense fog prevented anyone seeing them until John Barrett, a Customs Officer, saw them from the land. The watch boat put out and found the men near exhausted, the seaman's legs being totally numb (3) Foundered and became a total loss between the Shambles and Portland Breakwater on 01-NOV in wind variable
