Summary

Welsh brigantine, wrecked on Portland Breakwater 1869

Map

Type and Period (2)

Full Description

`...struck on the rocks forming the base of the breakwater...during a fresh breeze from the SSE. The crew were taken off by some boats from the shore, and a steamer put out from Weymouth, but owing to the vessel making too much water it was impossible to get her off. She was, however stripped, and the masts taken out of her. During the South-westerly gale on Sunday she went to pieces. (2) `On Friday night last this brig went on the breakwater striking the rocks at the base, and on Sunday beat to pieces in the SW gale. The vessel was on passage 10 miles NE of the Casquetts when the SW gale caused her to run for the shelter of Portland Roads, and she anchored in 5 fathoms. Captain ordered the pumps cleaned, and three days later when the weather went fine, she proceeded around the breakwater fort. The ship was tacked to the SW and then anchored with two kedges run out, but the tide running very strong drove her on the rocks and she foundered. Boats from Weymouth and the near shore came alongside and helped strip the wreck of her masts. The captain attributed the loss to her having missed stays in consequence of the winds. The shipwrecked crew were sent to their homes in Llanelly by Mr Damon, agent of the Shipwrecked Mariners Society at Weymouth.
