`Portsmouth 30th July: The BRITON, Richards, from Youghal to London, was sunk on Tuesday morning near Portland, in consequence of having her larboard bows stove by getting in contact with the NORTH ASH of Brixham. Crew saved. Master: Richards Date of Loss Qualifier: A (1)

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.

“The ship was in collision with the British vessel, North Ash in the English Channel 8 nautical miles (15km) off St. Alban’s Head, Dorset and sank. There were no casualties amongst her seven crew.” Also; Times: Saturday, 1/8/1829, Issue 13981 – “The Briton, from Youghall for London and the North Ash of Dartmouth, came in contact eight miles S.S.E. of St. Alban’s Head, when the Briton sunk the master and one man got on board the North Ash, and landed at Portland; five of the crew took to the boat, and landed here.” Note: Issue 13982; Torbay, July 30 – “The North Ash, from Sunderland, arrived here today, with the loss of bowsprit, and much damage, having been in contact with the Briton, from Youghall to London.” Issue 13983 – Cowes, August 2 – Twenty firkins of butter have been picked up and brought here, supposed to be part of the cargo of the Briton, from Youghall.”
