Full Description

Ada was built 1868, had a net tonnage of 96 tons and was owned by R. Lewis of Harwich. Vessel lost in SSW force 9 winds 21 Dec 1888 (1)(3) en route from London to Exeter, carrying a cargo of oil paraffin. Captained by R. Layzell. All four crew members lost (1).

Nett Tonnage 120 tons.

Western Daily Press, Wednesday, 26/12/1888 – On Monday a stern of a boat was washed ashore a few miles from Bridport. Upon it, apparently cut with a knife, were the words, “Ada sprung a leak, tried to get to Portland. Send this to Harwich; A Layzell, mate. Heavy sea; foundered off Portland; took to boat; expect all four to perish” Since the discovery 200 barrels of paraffin have been washed ashore at the same spot, presumably part of the Ada’s cargo. There are a number of vessels in Lloyd’s List named Ada, but the wrecked vessel is thought most likely to be the ketch-barge, Ada Jane. 120 tons, belonging to Harwich…
