Full Description

` - in bearing up for Portland Roads on Wednesday, due to strong weather in coming around the Bill, some three quarter mile from land, one of the other vessels in the area suddenly broached to, ran into her, and cut her stern to the waterline, at the same time carrying away her mizzen topmast and rigging as well as her steering apparatus finding herself sinking, the ULVERSTONES master made signals to the stranger, who took no notice. The first boat they got out was smashed by the sea, but they finally got away in the longboat and rowed for land. The vessel sank 20 minutes later. They met up with the pilot cutter TURK, who took them on board so that they reached Weymouth at 4pm. The other vessel was the ABRAHAM of Sabioncello, Shields to New York. Her mate testified that a heavy sea carried away her steering gear, causing her to collide and in the circumstances could render no assistance to the sinking vessel. A writ was served on the Austrian vessel for #8,000. Year Built: 1811 Builder: Ripley and Co.
