A periscope lens and sighting device possibly from this vessel has been reported to the Receiver of Wreck as possibly coming from this vessel, 50 24.77N 002 26.11W. Droit A/007).(3)

Type VIIC U-Boat.

30-DEC-1944: Operating undetected in the English Channel, U772 had sunk three merchantmen before attacking coastal convoy TBC 1, sinking one merchant and damaging another. Her periscope and schnorchel were then spotted by Wellington L of No.407 RCAF, which illuminated the craft with a Leigh light and dropped 6 depth charges. The aircraft circled the scene but saw no wreckage or oil. Believed sunk off Portland Bill in 50 05N 002 31W. (3) Kemp

U772 formerly believed sunk in position 50 05N 002 31W south of Weymouth on 30-DEC-1944, by aircraft depth charges. This attack is now believed to have been against U486, which escaped unharmed, and U772 is now believed to have been sunk in the North Atlantic, south of Cork, in position 51 16N 008 05W, by depth charges from HMS NYASALAND.
