Wreck Site and Archaeological Remains:

Wreck listed as lying in 66 metres, 8 metres high, off the Isle of Wight. (7)

A brass superstructure porthole, 18" in diameter, lacking glass; and a brass hull porthole window only, 8.75" in diameter, recovered from the charted site of the EUGENE SCHNEIDER, 34 miles south of the Needles. (Droit 230/04) (6)

Wreck Event and Documentary Evidence:

Sank following collision with the SS BURUTU. (1)(2) Described in this source as a sailing vessel, material of construction unknown.

Foundered. (3) Incorrectly described in this source as a screw-driven steamship built of steel.

NB: This vessel is indexed twice in the Shipwreck Index of the British Isles; under Dorset (AJ), stating the position of loss as "Bill of Portland", source (2); and under Isle of Wight (BB), stating the position of loss as "30 miles SW of St Catherine's Point", source (3).

5 images of the EUGENE SCHNEIDER are owned by the State Library of Victoria, part of the Malcolm Brodie shipping collection, showing her as a three-masted full-rigged ship. One of the images is clearly annotated "Sunk by collision in the Channel with the BURUTU, Dec. 25/26." (4)

[It is difficult to tell from the images as reproduced on the website whether the vessel was constructed of steel or of wood. Either is possible at the period she was built.]
