Type and Period (2)

Full Description

Year Built: 1905 Builder: Naaml Ven Werf Where Built: Rotterdam Engine HP: 77 Propulsion: Screw driven, 6 cylinder oil engine Owner: BP Co Ltd Master: J Campbell Crew: 13 Date of Loss Qualifier: A At 2am. during a blizzard, this oil tanker belonging to the British Oil Tanker Co. Ltd. struck the rocks at the south entrance to Portland Harbour where HMS HOOD was sunk. The oil tanker had the bottom plates knocked out of her, her captain immediately firing distress rockets and sounding his siren, which alerted the Weymouth lifeboat crew. With the sea very rough and in heavy driving rain and snow, the leaking oil smoothed out the sea. Both the chief engineer and chief officer of the port went on board, then with lines tied around their waists and in total darkness, swam through the oil to reach the rocks in order to allow the crew to get ashore. Hence the lifeboat made a wasted trip. The tugs PILOT and PETREL were summoned, took on board the crew and landed them at Portland, the 2nd. mate complaining that his dog was still on board. The wreck which was uninsured, lay beam on, 400 yards from the breakwater Fort. The wreck was bought by Turners of Weymouth for breaking.
