Maritime record MWX1619 - Unidentified 1666 Channel Island Cargo Vessel

The wreck of a Channel Island cargo vessel which was reported stranded at Portland Race on the 1st of December 1666, as a direct result of stormy weather conditions. Constructed of wood and registered in Guernsey, she was a sailing vessel.

Stranded/Total Loss (2) `Dec.1, Weymouth: Several vessels have been wrecked on Portland beach...The storm began on Tuesday, wind SW, and was very violent; the persons drowned would have been saved had they kept to their vessels...a Guernsey vessels goods [belong] to merchants of Lyme; the goods are all saved... The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
