Full Description

Built: 1879. Crew: 4. Passengers: 3. Master: F Goldsmith. Owner: J. Howard, Frodsham, Cheshire. Date of Loss Qualifier: A. Vessel came into West Bay originally carrying a cargo of oil cake from Liverpool, and after discharging, loaded 150 tons of gravel, then remained in Bridport harbour basin for about two weeks. She eventually left on an afternoon tide with two pilots on board named Gale and Barnes. In leaving, she struck the west pier and loosened a lot of timber. Four hundred yards out to sea she began to fill rapidly, forcing her pilots and crew to leave the vessel, taking to the boat that followed them out. The ALBION, with main and foresails still set, drifted west and sank 150 yards offshore. Next day, the vessel washed in and broke up. She was in fact the second vessel commanded by Mr Goldsmith to be lost in 18 months. (1)
