Summary

1817 wreck of French craft which stranded near Bridport on her passage to Rouen. Constructed of wood, she was a sailing vessel, and may possibly be identifiable with a French chasse-maree which was said to have been lost at Charmouth in the same gale.

Full Description

`A violent gale of wind at about SSW, attended with a very high tide, was experienced at Plymouth, Falmouth, and Penzance, on Saturday night and Sunday morning. <2>

`The TROIS AMIS of Bordeaux, bound to Rouen, was totally lost near Bridport during the gale on Sunday night. Only a passenger saved. <3>

Definitely identified as a chasse-maree in source <5>.

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
