On 21-FEB-1812, the FOX, bound from London to Exeter was driven ashore near Bridport and totally wrecked, the crew saved (4)

Interpreted as a British merchant sailing vessel, either a schooner or a sloop, en route London to Exeter with deals [thereby conflating the FOX with the smack laden with deals in (2) above]. (6)
