Summary

1670 wreck of English barque which stranded in Bridport Harbour creek on her passage from Pointe de Croisic with salt, one of three ships apparently lost at the same time and place. Constructed of wood, she was a wooden sailing vessel. Loss Date: 19/12/1670

The first of three ships apparently lost at the same time and place:

'Letter from Anthony Thorold to Hickes...she came in with two others who are also supposed to be lost.' (1)(3)

Three merchant sailing vessels including an English barque registered in Lyme Regis and carrying salt, wrecked off West Bay. (4)

Dec. 19. Lyme. 'Ant.Thorold to Hickes. A barque of Lyme, from Croisic with salt has been cast away at Bridport Creek, and two of her men drowned. She came with two others, who are also supposed to be lost'. (5)

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
