Full Description

Having left Dunkirk 20 days previously, she encountered SW force 9 wind conditions and made for the shelter of the English coast. The lifeboat was launched at 1am after the ship had gone ashore and been thrown on her beam ends. As the lifeboat approached the wreck her main boom and sail struck the lifeboat overturning it. Fortunately, it righted, recovered its crew plus the shipwrecked mariners, and returned to Lyme Regis. One Coastguard officer, Mr.Martin, lost his life when the lifeboat overturned. (1)(2) Lyme 8th January: The GENEREUSE, Charrier, of and from Libourne for Dunkirk, foundered off this port yesterday and is now on shore near Charmouth; crew saved by the lifeboat from hence.
