Full Description

`The storm was so violent that the ship soon broke to pieces. (2) `The LAGNITICUS, Poirreaux, loaded with wool, from Bordeaux for Havre, was lost the 24th ult. near Lyme; but the crew and part of the cargo saved. (3) Source (3) expresses the name of the vessel as LAGNITICUS, followed by source (4); source (2) expresses the name as LAGUITICUS DE LILLE DIEU where DE LILLE DIEU probably represents the port of registration, reconstructed as `de lIle dYeu. Source (2) gives place of loss as 4 miles from Lyme. Also, as the information is taken from an Extract of a letter from Lyme, July 17th it throws some doubt on the date given in LL. Both 17-JUL and 24-JUL are Sundays, so this could be due to a misinterpretation of some phrase such as `Sunday last in LL. Master: Poirreaux Date of Loss Qualifier: A

The building date for this vessel is an estimate based on an average age at wrecking of twenty years. This average is derived from those vessels wrecked on the Dorset coast whose age at wrecking is known.
