Full Description

A Carmelite friary is said to have been founded at Bridport in 1261. Carmelite friars were mentioned there circa 1266 when Cardinal Ottoboni asked the Bishop of Salisbury 'to permit the friars to perform divine offices without molestation or difficulty in the oratory which they have built at Bridport' (probably Saint Andrew's chapel). They were given a gift of three oaks from the royal forest in 1268, and in 1268 or 1269 received a legacy from Christina de Stikelane. The religious house, if such there was, must have ceased to exist by 1365 when Sir John Chideock was refused a licence to confer upon the Carmelite order a mill and land at Bridport for the establishment (or re-establishment) of a friary.
