Summary

A semi-circular structure surrounding an innner circular feature are visible on aerial photographs of the north-west end of Portlands's North Eastern Breakwater. It is considered likely this could be the remains of a First World War battery observation post. It is possible this structure may have also been reused or modified during the Second World War.

Full Description

A World War I battery observation post located on the Middle Arm of the North Eastern Breakwater, Portland Breakwater. It is constructed of brick and concrete. A field visit in 1983 found it to be in a good condition. Battery observation post. LOCATION: 'B' Head, North Eastern Breakwater (Middle Arm), Portland Breakwater. <1-3>

A semi-circular structure surrounding an innner circular feature are visible on aerial photographs of the north-west end of Portlands's North Eastern Breakwater <4-5>. It is considered likely this could be the remains of the First World War battery observation post described above. It is possible this structure may have also been reused or modified during the Second World War. These features were digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). They are still visible at this location on the most recent comprehensive aerial images available to the project.
