Summary

A World War Two pillbox recorded on Chesil Beach to the east of Lawrence's Cottage on the Burton Road. The pillbox was constructed in 1940 and was built of iron and concrete. It was situated within the Abbotsbury Defence area, which at this time, was manned by the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. A field visit in 1996 found that the pillbox had been demolished, all that remained was some iron and concrete poking through the beach. The pillbox is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1948.

Full Description

Pillbox DEMOLISHED. All that remains is some iron and concrete poking through the beach. [Shown on OS 1:2500 sheet SY 5485 - 5585 (1963)]. E of Lawrence's Cottage on the Burton road.E of Lawrence's Cottage on the Burton road. <1-3>

The piillbox is visible on aerial photographs <4-5> taken in 1948 and was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
