Summary

A World War II extended defence officers post located on Brownsea Island. This was the control centre for exploding sea mines in the Channel in the event of invasion. It was constructed in 1940-41 and is built of concrete. The access hatch is a heavy metal trap 1foot 9 inches by 2 feet 3 inches. Also present are two ventilation shafts. Over the edge of the cliff there are reinforced concrete pieces. These may be observation windows overlooking the harbour entrance. A field visit in 1994 found that some of the structure had been subjected to coastal erosion and fallen over the cliff.

Full Description

Underground control centre for exploding sea mines in the Channel in the event of invasion. The access hatch is a heavy metal trap 1ft 9ins x 2ft 3ins. There are two ventilation shafts visible, and over the edge of the cliff there are reinforced concrete pieces some 6ft x 2ft. These may be observation windows overlooking the harbour entrance. Some of the structure has fallen over the cliff and metal girders have been exposed. <1-3>
