Full Description
Rubble stone building of 3 storeys and 3 bays, with a pantile roof and coped gables. The building has been unsympathetically converted, with new doors and windows and the addition of a small pediment on both long elevations. The mill forms the eastern end of a long range. A stone plaque on wall states This flax-swingling mill the first introduced into the west of England was erected by Richard Roberts 1803. At the western end is 6-bay, 2- storied building with a pantile roof. The northern side was formerly open, supported by rubble pillars, but these have been infilled with rubble stone. The gap between this and the mill has been infilled later by a taller 2 storey, 2 bay building of rubble stone with a clay tile roof and containing wide entrance. The mill projects further southwards than rest of range and a has prominent tailrace arch at the southern end of the west elevation. The east elevation shows a blocked door at ground level. On the south side of the mill is a rubble stone building of 2 storeys and 4 bays with a slate roof, now converted to dwelling. The east elevation has 2 arched doors, one to each storey, although the lower one has been altered to window. The straight joint on the north elevation marks where the western 2 bays have been extended, and this later part has flat-headed stone window openings. This building is separated from the mill by the race that probably contained a turbine originally. Scars on the wall to the south show that former wheel-house spanned this gap. The cast-iron top of the horizontal turbine casing leans against the north elevation of mill. All the watercourses remain. Adjacent to the east end of the mill is a bridge over the stream. The eastern, upstream, side of the bridge has prominent stone cutwaters, with a stone-stepped spillway overflow nearby. Grove house, a listed 18th century thatched stone house formerly belonging to Richard Roberts stands short distance to the west of Grove Mill. <1-4>
