Full Description

Group of barrows in Quomp Copse - see plan: SZ 1312796291: No 1.Situated on the edge of a ridge in Quomp Copse, 540 metres east of Park Cottages. The mounds of the barrows vary in diameter between 7.5 metres and 13 metres and in height between 0.6 metres and 1 metre. Each mound is surrounded by a ditch from which material for its construction was quarried. The north eastern and south western barrow, at each end of the line, lie within circular earthwork enclosures. These include a bank, ditch and outer bank with overall diameters of 20 metres and 30 metres respectively; they are believed to be tree planting enclosures of a more recent date. A low spread mound 10m diameter surrounded by berm, bank, and ditch. Small depression, 1m across and 0.3m deep may indicate previous excavations but more likely removal of tree roots. SZ 1310096270: No 2. A bowl barrow 13m diameter with fairly distinct edge. Small irregular depression about 0.4m across in centre, no surrounding ditch visible.

SZ 1309596254: No 3. A low mound approx. 8m across, probably a barrow, the SW side is indistinct where it merges with No 4. No surrounding ditch visible.

SZ 1309096244: No 4. A bowl barrow 10m diameter, indistinct to NE where it merges with No 3 and to the South. Small depression 0.5m across NE of summit. No surrounding ditch visible.

SZ 1307596216: No 5. A slightly oval mound 12m across, surrounded by a sloping berm a slight inner bank followed by a ditch and outer bank. Damaged by a trackway around the N side. As with No 1 bank and ditch may be modern or part of a "Dorset" type barrow. (1)
