Summary

Parish church with 12th century north doorway and parts of south arcade; 14th century main body of nave and aisles; 19th century work by David Brandon. Flint and rubble with ashlar dressings. Tiled and lead-covered roof, some stone-slated margins. Gable stone copings. Plan: nave; chancel; north and south aisles; west tower; north porch, north vestry, south organ chamber. Font of around 1200.

Full Description

The church of St. Mary and St. Bartholomew at Cranborne is presumed to stand on the site of the Abbey church (see SU 01 SE 11).

The north doorway, not in its original position, is mid 12th century, and the lower part of the south wall of the south aisle and the footings of the nave and aisles were rebuilt in the early 14th century. The west tower is 15th century; one of the finest in East Dorset. The chancel was rebuilt in the 19th century. <3>

Church of St Mary and St Bartholomew. The earliest extant part of the church are the reset C12th North doorway and the pedestal bound font of c1200. Grade I. <2>
