Full Description

Area centred at SY 594922. This area of approximately 900 sq. metres has three distinct areas of cultivation. The W. half has regularly spaced strip lynchets running in a N-S direction. The centre and S part has two N.W - SE lynchets, and what appears to be ridge and furrow ploughing running down the hillside in the same direction as the lynchets; each is approximately 8.0m wide.

A further set of ridges and lynchets occupies the E. part of the area, but here the general direction of cultivation is NE-SW. The whole system is of Md. type, cut through by the road to COMPTON VALENCE from the DORCHESTER-AXMINSTER road. See also AP CPE/UK/2431/3145-6. <1>

Earthwork remains of a Medieval field system to the south of Compton Valence. The system comprises strip lynchets and ridge and furrow, all clearly visible on aerial photographs taken in 1948. <2>
