Summary

Earthwork remains of a medieval field system comprising, in the western part of the area, a number of small square fields with banks approximately 5 metres wide and 0.7metres high. In the eastern area are a few lynchets averaging 0.4 metres in height, dividing field strips, and some larger rectilinear fields with banks averaging 0.6 metres high.

Full Description

Area centred at SY 594929 An area containing a number of small square fields in the W. part, the banks being approximately 5.0m wide and 0.7m high. In the E. part of the area are a few lynchets averaging 0.4m high dividing field strips, and some larger rectilinear fields with banks averaging 0.6m high.

The whole area is now pasture, but the evidence of former cultivation apears to be of Md type. See also AP.CPE/UK/2431/3145. <1>

Earthwork remains of a medieval field system to the south of Compton Valence. The site comprises a regular series of strip field boundaries with an area of smaller rectilinear fields to the north of Tout Hill. These features are visible on aerial photographs. <2-4>
