Full Description

The former church of CLIFTON MAYBANK was demolished in 1824. <2>

In 1291 the building was styled a chapel, and in Dean CHANDLER'S Register said to be not dedicated, and dependent on YETMINSTER church. The chapel of a single aisle, was apparently built in 1600, a stone in the W. wall being inscribed with that date. It was roofless and ruined at the end of the 18thc. In 1648 it was described as 'paled within a large square of grass'.

There are no remains, but the site, S.W. of the house, is marked by a slight depression in the ground. The churchyard is said to have never been consecrated, but human bones have been found in it. <3>

The site of the chapel is visible as a rectangular depression 18.0m. E. to W., 6.0m. N. to S., and 0.1 m deep. It is surrounded by a bank of varying size but which averages 2.0m. wide and 0.2 m. high. This bank may represent foundation walls, but there is no definable entrance. The O.S. siting symbol is placed centrally within the site. The field is grass covered, but incorporates a bank which averages 0.4 m. high and 3.0 m. wide and may once have been a precinct bank or wall of the chapel. This bank is approximately 100 m. long and 40.0 m. wide, the brick garden wall of CLIFTON MAUBANK acting as the N. side of the enclosure. <4>

Recorded inf. in T.2. infers the possibility of two chapels on this site, or of a rebuilding, in 1600, of the original. It was not possible to clarify which of these possibilities was the more correct. <5>
