Full Description

A 19th century toll-house (SY 67559207) on the west side of the Dorchester road has a hexagonal plan with rendered walls and rusticated quoins to the corner. The low-pitched slate roof rises to a central ball-finial of copper and the porch on the east side has rusticated jambs and a segmental head. (Toll-house shown but not described on OS 6" 1903). <1>

SY 676921. The former toll-house at West Ward, Charminster on the west side of Wolfeton meadows was built by the Maiden Newton Trust (established 1777-8) which by the Act of 1830 was empowered to build a new road from Charminster to Dorchester, which now forms part of the Dorchester - Yeovil road (A.37). The Department of the Environment has agreed to include the toll-house on the Statutory List of Historic Buildings as a Grade 2 building. <2>

‘The following monuments are of the second half of the 18th and first half of the 19th century. … (21) Toll-House (67559207), on the W. side of the Dorchester road, 300 yds. W. of (4), has rendered walls and slated roofs and is of the 19th century. It is hexagonal on plan with rusticated quoins to the corners which are visible from the road. The lowpitch roof rises to a central ball-finial of copper. The porch on the E. has rusticated jambs and a segmental head; the sashed windows have slightly rounded heads.’
