Summary

Crook Hill Brickworks marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1843. The works are marked on the 1939 Ordnance Survey map, and are also visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946.

Full Description

Site of brickworks established before the mid-19th century. It formerly made bricks, tiles, drainpipes and coarse pottery, but after the First World War only land drain pipes, wirecut bricks, and some hand-bricks were produced. A Hoffmann kiln was built in the 1890s and worked until the site closed in 1969. Recorded by NRIM. Photographed. <5>

Also on the first edition OS map <1> marked as Brick and Tile Works. On the second edition map <2> as Chickerell Brick Works, and Crook Hill Brickworks marked on 1939 OS map. The works is also visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken at Chickerell in 1946. The site is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project <3-4>. This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
