Monument record MDO885 - Lime kiln at Church, Chickerell

A lime kiln recorded as ‘limekiln’ on the second edition (1900-2) Ordnance Survey map. The date of this kiln is not known but it is most likely to be late nineteenth century. The 1969 1:10,000 scale Ordnance Survey map shows a building at this location, but the site was visited in 1992-93 by Peter Stanier, who could find no trace of the kiln structure.

Grid reference used by Stanier SY 6432 8078 {1} amended with reference to {2}. First edition Ordnance Survey map not consulted, so current grid reference not precise.

'Consultation of the First Edition Ordnance Survey of 1890 indicates that a second limekiln recorded within the site was actually situated outside the site boundary (Fig. 2, 11; DHER).'
