Full Description

(SZ 09729970 at 'A' & SD 09729956 at 'B') Tumulus (NR) (Twice) <1>

Bow barrows a. Diameter 18 paces. Height 5 1/2ft. Ditched. Mound is on berm raised 2 1/2ft. Apparently modern and of tree-ring origin. b. Diam 21 paces. Height 6ft. Ditched 2 1/2 paces wide x 1ft deep. <2>

The above description of these bowl barrows is accurate. 'A' has a slight berm caused by the planting of a recent tree-ring, the sawn stumps of which are still visible. It is surrounded by a faint, but surveyable, ditch. 'B' is in good condition and surrouned by a surveyable ditch with two dead firs on the west. <3>

No change: published 1:2500 survey revised. 'A' is some 22.0m in diameter overall and 'B' some 26.0m. <4>

A Bronze Age barrow at Gibbet Firs on East Parley Common is visible on current Lidar imagery and was plotted from this source by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

The barrow is visible as a low elliptical mound 20m long by 18m wide. An outer ditch is visible but poorly defined on current Lidar imagery. It appears to narrow to around 0.6m on the south side and on its east and west sides, where definition is strongest, it appears to be around 2.5m wide. The ditch on the north side may have been spread or partially infilled; it appears slightly segmented and irregular on this side, with a flattened area to the north <6>.
