Full Description
Poole Museums Service Archaeological Unit conducted an archaeological evaluation at 14 Wick Lane, Christchurch, during 1991in advance of residential development . The results were subsequently published as a short note in PDNHAS volume 107 (1) Although much of the monument description below is derived from an unpublished client report (2).
Excavation of three evaluation trenches and a test pit revealed evidence for post-medieval activity. This comprised a well defined cut [26] into natural sand in Trench 2 and continuing under the southern trench edge. [26] was up to 3m long as exposed and contained large quantities of brick and Verwood type pottery. It may represent a sand extraction pit.
Trench 3 contained a stone wall foundation [1] overlying a large post-medieval pit [13]. This was excavated to a depth of 1.5m but not bottomed. This may represent a sand extraction pit or a back filled cellar.
A linear feature [6] crossed Trench 3 at the southern end of [13]. It was excavated to a depth of 1.5m below ground level. Verwood type pottery was recovered from the base of the fill. The sides of the feature comprised buff clay, probably a lining and indicating a drainage ditch.
A subsequent watching brief demonstrated that much of the Wick Lane frontage was disturbed by post-medieval activity.
