Full Description
SZ 15699280. An oven-like structure, 3.0m long and 1.0m wide was excavated during construction of a car-park. It was built into the bank associated with the defensive ditch (SZ 19 SE 100). A Medieval green-glazed jug was incorporated into the structure as a compact pile of sherds (Jarvis 1983).
Archaeological observations were carried out during levelling for the construction of a car park at Bank Close, Christchurch, during 1980. These observations were subsequently published as a short note in DNHAS monograph 5 (Jarvis 1983) and subsequently in the Dorset Proceedings (Jarvis 1987).
The observations revealed an oven-like structure about 3m long and 1m deep. It contained some white vesicular material, considered to be fused wood ash, and almost all of a medieval green glazed tripod jug. The oven was built into the rear of a bank associated with the 12th-13th century medieval ditch A. The jug has been donated to the Red House Museum.
