Full Description
K. Jarvis and P. Aitken conducted a watching brief at the Kings Arms Hotel, Castle Street Christchurch, during the excavation of a trench for the underpinning of the front wall in 1985. The results were subsequently published in PDNHAS volume 107 (1).
The watching brief recorded evidence for road levels in the south side of the trench. Four main layers of gravel were recorded above the mortar destruction levels of the town defences. Either the earliest road was laid directly on to the levelled defences or terracing had occurred before it was laid. Furthermore the building line had clearly remained with the width of the trench from the medieval period to the present day.
