Full Description
K. Jarvis and P. Aitken conducted a watching brief at the Kings Arms Hotel, Castle Street Christchurch, during the excavation of a trench for the underpinning of the front wall in 1985. The results were subsequently published in PDNHAS volume 107 (1).
The watching brief recorded evidence for the medieval town defences on the east side of the town. This comprised a layer of chalk and mortar [7 & 12] similar to that recorded elsewhere on the line of the town defences. This layer dipped into an area containing ironstone suggesting a ditch that was open when the medieval town wall was demolished or decayed.
