Full Description

MBA Bronze Palstave, no loop, found November 1921, south of Purewell. Now in Red House Museum, Christchurch. <1>

Found by Mr S Burbridge, when a meadow (immediately behind a house called Mayfield) at Pritchards Nurseries, Stanpit, was developed with an extension to the house. It was discovered at a depth of 4ft - 4 1/2ft in sandy soil. <2>

This palstave is flanged, has a stop ridge, a slight mid-rib, and a crescentic blade but no loop. Length 6". Acquired in 1922. <3>

Maurice Prichard, Nurseryman, is listed by Kelly's Directory for 1921 at 77 Purewell. 'Prichards Nurseries', centred at SZ 16759280, are now disused and no further information could be gained on the ground as to the exact part of the nursery which was extended in 1921. 'Mayfield' is not listed in 1921 and no house bordering the nursery is of this name. No 77 Purewell, at SZ 16729291, was evidently the office of the nursery but it is now derelict. <4>
