Summary

Leper hospital founded 1318, in use until the mid 17th century. A series of possible earthworks in a playing field on the south side of Barrack Road are visible on 2009 Google Earth imagery and these may be associated with the former leper hospital. The site was mapped by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

The hospital fell into disuse when leprosy became almost an extinct disease - prior to the middle the 17th century. <1>

Nicholas Crompton was Governor in 1609. <2>

Lesser Hospital (Net income under £50) dissolved or moved elsewhere before AD 1500. <4>

The site is occupied by large 19th c houses and gardens and a modern recreation ground. <5>

A series of possible earthworks in a playing field on the south side of Barrack Road are visible on Google Earth imagery and these may be associated with the former leper hospital <8>. The site was mapped by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
