Summary

An Early Bronze Age bronze flat axe was found at Hengistbury Head in 1953 by a schoolboy while on holiday. It was two feet below the natural surface, east of the old ironstone quarry, and close to a round barrow (SZ 19 SE 79). It is now in the Russell Coates Museum, Bournemouth (accession number 682).

Full Description

EBA flat axe found in 1953 at Hengistbury Head two feet below the natural surface, east of the old ironstone quarry. Acc. No. 682. <1>

Very corroded but slight flanges visible. It could not be seen whether the axe was of the beaten or the cast type. (SZ 17689066) Found by a schoolboy while on holiday. Sited from information supplied at the Russell-Coates Museum. <2>

The axe, believed to be a French import, was found as described by <1> close to a round barrow. The find may have come from a flat grave associated with barrow SZ 19 SE 89 or from another, now destroyed, round barrow. <3>
