Barrow 5 (St. George Gray Barrow A). A small mound 18m in diameter, excavated by Gray in 1919. Burnt flint and worked flint including a scraper recovered, and Iron Age pottery recovered but no evidence of burials recorded.
A round barrow situated in the northern part of Hengistbury Head, to the east of Barn Cottage and adjacent to Barrow 4. It is a low mound about 18 metres in diameter and much disturbed by rabbits. The barrow was excavated by St George Gray in May 1919. No central burial was located by the excavation and no earlier prehistoric pottery was found. The barrow sealed an old ground surface described by St George Gray as a compact sandy loam with no gravel. The mound itself consisted of loose sandy loam with a little gravel, with a layer of blackish earth, gravel and burnt flint above, which was sealed beneath the topsoil. Significant quantities of burnt flint were found in the upper part of the mound material. Iron Age pottery was found in an area disturbed by rabbits. About 600 pieces of worked flint were recovered from the barrow including cores, flakes and a transverse arrowhead. <5>
