Four 'Middle Acheulian' handaxes in the possession of Mr Merrifield of Corfe Mullen were found in the Lansdowne area (SZ 095914) c. 1910. Two (Nos 1,2) are well made ovate hand-axes with numerous scars clearly indicating soft hammer flaking. No. 3is a neatly made pointed hand-axe with straight sides and a butt which includes some cortex. No 4 is apparently a linguate tip of a hand-axe of medium or perhaps large size. Nos. 1 and 2 are in a light brown chert/flint and Nos 3 and 4 are in a mottled grey flint. At some British sites such as Barnsfield Pit, Swanscombe, industries specialising in ovates aree stratified above industries with numerous pointed rough-butted hand-axes, but it is not clear that this is a general order of events and the two types can be found together (Row 1981).
