Full Description

A round barrow on Kinson Common that was excavated in 1948 by the Ministry of Works in advance of development of the area by Bournemouth Corporation.

The area has now been developed and there is no evidence of the barrows. <3>

A bowl barrow 40 feet in diameter and 3.5 feet high, which had been robbed and also damaged by a wartime slit trench. In the centre of the barrow was a pit filled with dark soil, which had been almost completely destroyed by the robbing. No burial survived and the only find was a sherd of pottery. The mound was of two phases with a small ditched primary mound covered by a larger secondary mound with an encircling ditch.

A: A bowl barrow of complex construction, some 40 feet in diameter and 3 feet 6 inches high, consisting of a mound and ditch covering a central pit, the whole then being enclosed with an envelope of dark soil, with traces of an outer ditch. The pit had been robbed and only a few fragments of pottery remained, there being no secondary burials. A B and D were excavated in 1948. <4>
