Full Description

Palaeoliths and sharper Levallois flakes found 1927-31. In Calkin Collection, British Museum. <2>

Site of finds in sand-pit which is still being worked. "No finds have been made in the area since 1939" [Lt Col Drew]. Two Acheulian 'Pear shaped' hand-axes are on show in Dorset County Museum. Acc. Nos. 1939, 53; 1922, 4. <3>

The sand-pit has been filled in and the site is now a children's playground. <5>

SZ 059957. Twenty-three handaxes and ten flakes found at Council's Pit, West Howe, now in the British Museum. <4>

Palaeolithic implements including an Acheulian handaxes and Levallois flake found, between 1927-1939, during sand extraction. Lower Palaeolithic implements found at the Councils Pit, West Howe, include 23 handaxes 1 roughout 7 flakes and 1 Levallois flake. The geology in the area consists of Terrace 10 Gravel. Area has now been built over by a childrens playing field. <6>
