Full Description

SZ 07399677 Bronze Age Urnfield found AD 1929 <1> Urns in Calkin Collection British Museum. <2>

At the end of 1929, burial urns were discovered during road making on the Kinson Manor Estate. Fragments of urns were found throughout Nov and Dec. Remains of 13 burials were found in the road area and one more, as the result of trial digging in the adjoining ground. Seven of the urns were found in an upright position, three were inverted and the position of the rest is not known. The contents of the first urns were not preserved, but in at least 6 cases there were fragments of calcined bones. Although we are clearly dealing for the most part with a small cemetery of the Bronze Age, the evidence points to an overlap of late BA and early IA Cultures in this part of the country. <3>

Site now built over. See SZ 09 NE 5 for the Iron Age phase. <4>
