Full Description

A hoard of Iron Age and Roman coins found "some years ago" in an earthenware pot at Southants. <1>

Calkin gives January 1905 as the date the hoard was found and find spot SZ 12679497. He gives no evidence for this and admits it to be only approximate. <2>

The owner of the farm in 1951 had no knowledge of the hoard. <3>

There were a number of Republican coins but some were of 2nd cent AD date including four of Hadrian and it is suggested that the hoard was deposited about mid 2nd cent. The Roman coins totalled 61 including barbarous radiates. The Iron Age coins consisted of 3 Armorican silver types, the remainder being uninscribed Durotrigian - type A (silver staters) 83, type B (1/4 silver staters) 9, type C (bronze staters) 206 and type D (cast bronze coins) 306. Coins in the British Museum and Red House Museum, Christchurch. <5>

The Roman coins include a number of Republican coins, four of Hadrian and some barbarous radiates. It has been suggested that the hoard was deposited in the mid second century AD, but there appear to have been some third century coins in the hoard also. <1> <2> <5>
