Summary

A small bowl barrow, 15m across, is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs on the south bank of the river Frome. The barrow is situated on a knoll overlooking the valley to the north. The mound is surounded by a ditch this is visible to the south as a depression 3m wide and 0.2m deep, and likely to survive elsewhere as a buried feature. The top of the mound has a hollow and a 1m wide trench cut into it. These features possibly relate to military training activities.

Full Description

A large bowl barrow with a ditch. <2>

This barrow has a diameter of 15.0 metres and a height of 1.4 metres. There are only slight traces of a ditch in the East and South-East and here it is 3.0 metres wide and 0.2 metres deep. Elsewhere there is no trace of a ditch.
A hollow in the top has a diameter of 3.5 metres and is 0.6 metres deep and has a trench 1.0 metres wide leading from it to the Western base of the mound. Heather and fern covered. There were no surface finds. Bowl barrow. <4>

SY 81988750. Ditched bowl barrow, 43ft. Diameter and 5ft high with traces of ditch about 10ft. Wide, situated at the north-west end of a heathland plateau. The mound is steep-sided and flat-topped, though damaged by an excavation trench from the west. Hollowed in the centre. <6>

SY 820875. Round barrow east of Hyford Cottage. Scheduled. <8>

A bowl barrow at SY 81978749 is generally as described and measured by Authority (3). Revised at 1:2500 on MSD. <9>

A small bowl barrow, 15m across, is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken 1947 <3> on the south bank of the river Frome. It was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project. The feature is not visible under scrub on the most recent Google Earth imagery.
