Summary

A Bronze Age bowl barrow. In 1970 this monument was reported as being around 70 feet in diameter with a mound around 4 feet high, encircled by a ditch. The top of the mound has been disturbed, possibly as a consequence of antiquarian investigation. The barrow is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs to the south of Winfrith Technology Centre.

Type and Period (1)

Full Description

A flat topped and spread mound of 25.0 metres diameter, and 0.7 metres in height. There is no visible berm, or ditch. Slightly mutilated in top and sides by rabbits, and largely furze covered. A bowl barrow. No surface finds were made during field investigation. <2>

SY 82468630. Ditched bowl barrow, 70ft diameter and 4ft high, now ploughed and previously disturbed on top. <3>

The field is presently under crop and the bowl barrow is not visible. The ditch noted by (4) had probably been determined from an air photograph. Published survey retained at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <7>

The site of a Bronze Age bowl barrow is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs to the south of Winfrith Technology Centre <8>. It was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
